Industry figures relating to the cost of electricity to cool a server compared to the cost to power a server vary considerably according to the source. Industry analyst IDC reports that as much as 80% of the cost of electricity is spent on cooling server infrastructure compared to 20% spend on powering it. While Accenture estimates that the split is roughly 50/50 with a watt in cooling consumed for each watt used in computation.

For the calculations below, Kell has used a very conservative figure of 35% of the cost of electricity being spent on cooling versus computation.
